Launched in the year 1988, .pt is the domain extension sanctioned for Portugal, a country located in Southwestern Europe. The .pt domain is managed by the Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional (FCCN). All entities connected with Portugal can register for a .pt domain name. The registration procedure is hassle free, without many restrictions.
The second level domains alloted for .pt are:

- .publ.pt — for publication related websites
- .gov.pt — for the government of Portugal
- .org.pt — Non-commercial organizations

The .pt registration is provided on a first come first served basis. There are various restrictions involved in registering the sub domains, but the .com.pt registration is easy and unlimited. The registry is highly enthusiastic about promoting the .com.pt sub domain in Portugal and it has been phenomenally successful in attracting a large number of entities to register .com.pt websites.
A local company office and local residence are the basic requirements for a .pt domain name registration.
Two name servers should be configured to provide the necessary technical support. The tax number and date on which the company was formed are essential.
The domain name chosen must be similar to the company name. A domain name can be made up of 3-63 characters. All characters, digits, and hyphens are
allowed except that the hyphens should not be at the beginning or at the end of the domain name. Special characters such as ç, é, õ
